Sometimes, there is no 40k.... - Club Meeting 24 September

Well, ok, we might have played more 40K as well. There's an awesome tournament coming up, can you blame us?!

But there was more than just 40K happening at TCOW this week, much much more! In fact, if you count Star Wars: Destiny as a system (and I know I do) then we had a total of 5 systems being played this week.

We had some itty-bitty city action as Dave and Nice Damian played some Dropzone Commander amongst the sprawl of Ogdenville (or was it North Haverbrook?)...

It was Dave's Shaltari taking on Damian's Resistance.

I'm not 100% sure who won this one? Possibly Lyle Langley...

Gav and Mike played some Flames of War, Late War V4 by the looks of what was going on...

Russian steel, on the move....

Monkey and I played some Bolt Action, with the pride of the German forces, my SS, taking on a bunch of old men....this should be a piece of pumpernickel!

Preliminary bombardments definitely did the trick...

I can't remember the result of this one for some reason.....

And yes, alright, there was 40k as well. Darren walked a new gamer through an intro game. Darren took Drew Carey against the new guys (I didn't get your name dude, sorry) Tau. I have a feeling Darren took cheaty dice.

And then Darren and I managed a quick 1,000 point game. I took some Marine tanks and he took the cheaty Drew Carey again...

Funny thing...I can't remember the result of this one either? Dark Lances suck though...

Don't forget...

You bring 900 points and you get a buddy each game...

Head over to the club Facebook for deets of the event. It's gonna be...

Club Meeting - 29 January

Apologies to some old, dead dudes...

'Twas the day before DanCon, up at Sturgis West House
14 gamers rolled dice, while avoiding their spouse;
The terrain on the tables were laid out with care,
In hopes it would block line of sight here and there;
The children all opted to stay home instead,
While the gamers were happy they weren't 'round their legs.

As the above suggests, we had a great turnout this weekend. Normally this wouldn't be a surprise, but it's a holiday weekend here in Auckland and the weather is good. You'd expect more people to have headed to a beach to make the most of the weather.

Not us. We're gamers.

We had six tables covered in models and terrain and five different systems being played. Most were old stalwarts, but this weekend saw the first outing of Beyond the Gates of Antares at T.C.O.W.. Let's go through what got played...

Kings of War

Dan and Damien decided to skip getting in some last minute practise for DanCon and busted out the movement trays instead. It was Dan's Undead against Damian's Wizard Stinkfinger and his Ogre hordes. I didn't see much of this game, but I suspect the Undead will be feasting on those Ogre corpses for some time.

Flames of War

Jonathan and Daryl took DanCon a little more seriously and got in one last game before Monday's event. It was Jonathan's German Grenadiers holding out as long as they could against Daryl's Cossack horde. Things did not look good early on for the Germans, but I missed how this ended.

The Russians advance on a German position

That's a LOT of horses

X-Wing

Roger and I had a fairly one-sided game of X-Wing with his Imperial TIE Defenders and Special Forces TIE turning my ARC-170s and T70 X-Wing into space dust. I did have one small victory, as I managed to damage one TIE enough that it blew up as it flew into an asteroid on the final turn. The dice were against me for the most part, but the game was still fun. Even if we did end up with most of the ships bumping into each other in the middle of the tables.

Ironically, this was the one game I didn't get any photos of. It was that engrossing.

Dropzone Commander

There were two separate games of DZC - one saw David's Shaltari taking on John's Scourge, and the other had (other) Damien's Resistance facing the technological might of Darren's Post-Human Republic.

I didn't see the outcome of David and John's match, but Darren seemed to share my luck with dice and he made some rather unfortunate rolls.

It looks like there is a chance that track could bend

David's gold and turquoise Shaltari

Cue the Airwolf theme...

Meanwhile, a Resistance aircraft gets the drop on the PHR

Basically, it's Mad Max vs Star Trek

13 dice needing 4+, what's the worst that could happen?

Beyond the Gates of Antares

I'd been curious about this game ever since it's somewhat disastrous Kickstarter project. I'm pleased to see it's finally made it to gaming tables and this was my first chance to actually see it in action. At first glance, it seemed Bolt Action with smaller squads, and (not really) aliens. Turns out there's a lot more too it than that.

Mark and Rob travelled up from the depths of South Auckland to challenge Faizel to a couple of games. Mark bought the power armoured Concord, Rob had the monkey-like Ghar, and Faizal had some flinty Boromites.

The models look great painted and there's a lot of character there, but I'm not sure if it really appeals to me. I might wait for a few more models to come out and see if there's anything that really grabs my attention.

The Boromites take cover from the advancing fire coming from the Concord

A Concord vehicle and supporting drones

A bigger Concord drone, with Order Die for scale

A typical Concord unit with attendant drone

Another unit taking cover behind a rock while a drone blazes away

That's all for this week. Next club meeting is the fifth Bludgefest. Hopefully the weather's just as good and you can all make it along!

FULL HOUSE! Club Meeting - 19 June 2016

Mate! Sturges Road Community House was chocka-block on Sunday! You should have seen the place, it was jumpin'! If there was every any dispute (and to date there hasn't been, I'd just like to point out) that TCOW is THE GREATEST gaming club in Auckland, they've been well and truly dispelled!

We had games of all shapes, sizes, genres and colour. We had tanks. We had Wizards. We had dropships. We had cards. We had it all! Do you wanna see what we had? Sure you do, that's why you're here!

Frostgrave

Molly's Frostgrave campaign is well and truly underway with 2 tables of spooky looking terrain dominating the centre tables this week. Jon and Molly paired up while Bool and Martina walked their respective bands through their paces among the frozen streets.

Humans, Elves, Orcs (yeah, Orcs can be wizards too!) all vying for the best of the treasures and to get their spellbooks bolstered for the next time they ventured into the chilly surrounds of the frozen city.

Flames of War

Damo has done it! His completely unrealistic and historically inaccurate Japanese tank horde has taken shape and decided that it needed some competition! And what better way to introduce them to battle than against a German SS tank army, right?! I think we all know how this one is likely to end....

Damo managed to hold on here for quite some time, with his NGFS taking care of a single Panther while his air-wing failed to make any inroads into the far superior German armour. A hard-fought 5-2 to Darren. He really had to work for it!

Dropzone Commander

The Leprechaun's Tale continues with the Shaltari assaulting into the UCM through the building and monorails of Kobenhavn.

Monorail, monorail, monorail!

I'm unsure as to who won this one, but having played against the cheaty Shaltari before, I reckon it might have been them!

Bolt Action

Monkey and I decided to have a crack at some Bolt Action. Monkey brought his SAS and I brought my SS, so it was the battle of the S! He even had a tank on his side, which didn't make me feel so bad about bringing one!

The thing about Veteran units is that they're pretty small, so this one was a blood-fest! Lots of dead elite troops on both sides by the end of it! Monkey had to hold the objective in the centre to win. I just had to kill him....and I got so damned close! Last turn of the game, all the SAS are off the boxes and he runs a FREAKING OBSERVER in as his last action! Bastard!!! Such a fun game though!

Magic

Despite the TCOW Commander league being concluded the previous meeting, our group of card-floppers couldn't help but walk the Planes for a little while.

I believe the next organised play will be the next Conspiracy set, so watch this space!

But there you have it! Another TCOW in the books, and a successful one at that! If you're interested in Gaming in Auckland, why not come and join us. Details of meetings are on our Facebook page.

Next meeting is on the 3rd of July, so we hope to see you there!
