Alignment of Toys! - Club Meeting 24.04.2016

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

This weekend saw the remembrance of the sacrifices our forefathers made so we can enjoy the freedoms we hold dear today. We will remember them.

CLUB MEETING!

It was a long weekend in Auckland and you know what, we still had a full house. Players being shuffled around to fit everyone in and everyone laughing and having a great time!

And of course, I know that you know...and you know that I know that you know...what we played! Total system count = 6

Frostgrave

Frostgrave continues to get some great following here at TCOW and this week, Molly took Andrew and Jon through an intro game as they both had not played before. I love the terrain being used for Frostgrave, it just ticks all the boxes!

Flames of War

As always, a club stalwart! We had 2 games being run at the end of the room, both MW and LW varieties. Gav and Pat were indulging in a little MW action with Gav's Germans and Pat's Kiwi's taking a run at each other.

Mike and Darren we're ensconced in the LW side of things with Darren's Germans trying to hold back Mike's Brits through the bocage.

This is Not a Test!

Dan and Harrison marched into the Wasteland in search of bottle caps. As Harrison's warband was a little more formed than Dan's, the difference rule kicks in....so of course Dan chose to add 25 dogs!

Dropzone Commander

A couple of starter box games of DZC this week as people start getting a bit more involved in this system (me included). Dave and Pablo played first and then Pablo walked Faizal and I through another one. I really like this game so am very excited to get some bit painted up.

Dungeon Saga

Before I went off and hit some 10mm games, I took Faiz and Monkey through the first quest from Mantic's new dungeon crawler. Mistakes were made but everyone had fun and we're gonna look at doing a campaign for this one!

Magic

The battles of the Planeswalkers continues at TCOW!

Monkey and I also played some Modern....this happened.

Hedrons.....ALIGNED!

See y'all next time.

All of the games! Club Meeting - 10 April

The last few club meetings have been either on 'special' days or big club events. Best I can tell, there was nothing particularly special this Sunday just gone... other than a whole lot of people ignored the weather to meet up and play some games. We even had a couple of kids tag along.

It's worth pointing out the Sturges West Community House has space outside, as well as additional rooms, where kids can play. Your kids might not want to watch the adults play toy soldiers, but they could bring their own to play with other kids. This might be something to think about if you can't get a full leave pass from your other half.

Back to the gaming, we had a full room and it got a little tight at times, but everyone sucked in their respective guts and made it work.

Frostgrave, Magic, and HALO Fleet Battles (front - back)TNT, Flames of War, DZC, Bolt Action: Commando (front - back)

Frostgrave made a triumphal return to T.C.O.W as Molly finally got a game in. It was his fabulously painted dwarf enchanter and crew against my still work-in-progress goblin witch and crew. Our crews battled over Molly's new 4Ground fantasy terrain, a mix of generic ruins and Mordanburg houses. It really suited the setting and only needed some fake snow to complete the effect.

That's how the terrain looks straight out of the box (and assembled).

As for the game, the less said about that the better. My die had trouble rolling higher than 10 for most of the game, meaning even the attacks that did hit had no effect. In the end, my goblins skulked off the table dragging two pieces of treasure while Molly's dwarves claimed four. On the up side, the game was a lot of fun and I'm looking forward to my next one.

Next to us, Harrison and Peter got their post apocalypse fix with a game of This is Not a Test (TNT). The game has been on a bit of a low ebb of late, but it's a good bet things will pick up again once we start receiving the books (and other goodies) from the game's recent Kickstarter. I only managed to get one photo of the game, but Harrison has posted more on Facebook.

The Magic Commander league is still going strong. We had two tables of the usual suspects playing this week, with one game going until almost home time. Magic has a strong momentum with no signs of slowing down.

Meanwhile, the massed ranks of the Soviet Union's armoured might clashed with some of the best the German Wehrmacht had to offer. I don't recall the final score, but things certainly didn't look good for the Ruskies when I snapped these photos.

If you're wondering where the blue buildings came from, I'll get to those a little later.

In the somewhat distant future of Dropzone Commander, Alex's United Colonies of Man took the fight to Damian's Resistance on the streets of a war-ravaged city. This game was as epic as it gets, with both sides slugging it out for hours. If you'd like to see some more photos, Alex posted some to Facebook.

The battlefield with a Coke can for scale (no bananas were available). The UCM's artillery covers their dropships' advance.
Resistance helicopters prepare to pounce. The Resistance commander rides into battle in style.

Gregory ran a couple of demos of HALO: Fleet Battles, picking scenarios from the rule book that best showed off the main aspects of the game. Sadly, I wasn't able to get any photos of the games, but if you're a fan of the games it's well worth checking out. There's a ground combat version of the game coming, too.

Finally, David bought along some rules he's been working on for a pared down version of Bolt Action called Bolt Action: Commando. The premise of the game is you field a single section of inexperienced soldiers. Models activate individually and gain experience over time. You also earn supply points that can be used to purchase equipment and improve the abilities of your soldiers.

The Commando battlefield.Russians are not known for their subtly.
Indians use buildings to cover their advance......while one prepares an ambush for some DAK.

The rules are still in beta, but if you'd like to give it a go bring a dozen models along to club and get playing. The games I saw lasted no longer than an hour, and that was due to poor dice rolls making most of the shots miss.

Considering the recent announcement of Bolt Action 2nd Edition, this might be the game that scratches out 28mm WW2 itch until later this year.

Remember those blue buildings? They were made by Faizel (aka Token) and his shiny new 3D printer. He also had some bags of 15mm tanks and Warhammer Epic vehicles. I didn't get any photos of those models, but they looked great. Plenty of detail, even on the Epic vehicles.

Faizel's setup his own Facebook page, Token's Print n' Paint n' Accessories, where you can order your own goodies. This is probably the best way to get back into a game like Epic where the old models are no longer available.

Much detail. So crisp. Wow.
That's it for this week. See you all at the next club day on March 24!

DUST Returns! Club Meeting - 14 February

Even we at TCOW celebrate St. Valentines day, although we tend to celebrate it in a similar manner to Al Capone...with the elimination of our enemies!

With BattleCry just around the corner, a number of the guys took the opportunity to use the meeting as a refresher on rules and to finalise lists for the systems they're intending on playing. While BattleCry isnt as big this year as it has been in others, it will definitely be well represented by TCOW Alums!

Oh....and something came back....

DUST

Thats right! Contrary to popular belief on social media, we actually DO play DUST from time to time here in NZ. Dave and I took the opportunity to get a game in with Dave using a completely new force in the Allies (he's an Axis player at heart, I know it) and me taking a few of the new toys from the Operation: Babylon kickstarter.

And so we rolled a mission...and of course it had to be Free-For-All! For reference, we were using the DUST Battlefield rules. My 100 points of Axis had a lot more bodies that Dave's 100 on Allies which mean only one thing. He had lots of spendy big toys...

So we start rolling troops on. As I have the advantage in numbers, Dave then has the advantage in seeing where my dudes are coming on by passing his initial few activations. Effectively what I'm trying to do is get my guys to the objectives as quick as I can, using whatever cover is available. As my guys are Infantry 1, they're gonna potentially die very easily!

Dave was ready for that and with his Phaser Rangers walking on to the board, they open up and all but decimate my first unit of Sand Vipers. Cover saves mean nothing against power weapons like these!

My other unit cops a hail of autocannon fire from the roof of a busted-our building and they're gone as well. REally, I have to bring on something with a little more firepower.

Leopold shows up and with a mass-hail of 3.7mm fire wipes out the unit on the building. Revenge for the fallen...

Thats pretty much all she wrote from there, for the Axis troops at least.

The remainder of the game saw Dave mopping up what was left of my raggedy bunch. The Chef made an appearance behind the line (Scusi!) and cleaned out my Fox Cubs command squad and would have eaten my mortar next had they not been decimated by phaser fire.

All in all, I got my ass handed to me and had a heap of fun doing it. DUST is such a well-balanced and crafted game, it really is a shame about all the other issues that have plagued it.

Bolt Action

More Early War goodness for Bolt Action this week with Dave's Germans taking on Stu's Germans in the desert.

I'm not sure how the battle ended, but I have a pretty good idea that the Germans won the day.

Might have to pop along to BattleCry and have a watch of the Bolt Action...

TNT

TNT came back to TCOW this week as well with Harrison and Alex going at it in the ruins of humanity.

Flames of War

And in a noob on noob game Faizal and his Soviets battle against (guy who's name I cant rememeber, soz)  Darren (thanks Damo!) and his Germans. This one looked like a real instruction session in tactics and maneuvering on both sides of the table.

The highlight of this one was the sneaky Mobelwagens heading around the left flank, forcing the deployment of the Soviet reserves away from the main German force lest the objective fall into their hands. Very funny!

Magic Commander League

Week 3 and some moves are being made for the top tiers of the leader board. Check it out on Facebook .

You can tell that Magic is getting serious when this happens...

And that was that, TCOW was over for another week!

Good luck to all the TCOW'ers venturing to test their mettle at BattleCry this weekend. Roll well!

Next club meeting is on 28 February so see you there! GAME ON!
