Alignment of Toys! - Club Meeting 24.04.2016

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

This weekend saw the remembrance of the sacrifices our forefathers made so we can enjoy the freedoms we hold dear today. We will remember them.

CLUB MEETING!

It was a long weekend in Auckland and you know what, we still had a full house. Players being shuffled around to fit everyone in and everyone laughing and having a great time!

And of course, I know that you know...and you know that I know that you know...what we played! Total system count = 6

Frostgrave

Frostgrave continues to get some great following here at TCOW and this week, Molly took Andrew and Jon through an intro game as they both had not played before. I love the terrain being used for Frostgrave, it just ticks all the boxes!

Flames of War

As always, a club stalwart! We had 2 games being run at the end of the room, both MW and LW varieties. Gav and Pat were indulging in a little MW action with Gav's Germans and Pat's Kiwi's taking a run at each other.

Mike and Darren we're ensconced in the LW side of things with Darren's Germans trying to hold back Mike's Brits through the bocage.

This is Not a Test!

Dan and Harrison marched into the Wasteland in search of bottle caps. As Harrison's warband was a little more formed than Dan's, the difference rule kicks in....so of course Dan chose to add 25 dogs!

Dropzone Commander

A couple of starter box games of DZC this week as people start getting a bit more involved in this system (me included). Dave and Pablo played first and then Pablo walked Faizal and I through another one. I really like this game so am very excited to get some bit painted up.

Dungeon Saga

Before I went off and hit some 10mm games, I took Faiz and Monkey through the first quest from Mantic's new dungeon crawler. Mistakes were made but everyone had fun and we're gonna look at doing a campaign for this one!

Magic

The battles of the Planeswalkers continues at TCOW!

Monkey and I also played some Modern....this happened.

Hedrons.....ALIGNED!

See y'all next time.

All of the games! Club Meeting - 10 April

The last few club meetings have been either on 'special' days or big club events. Best I can tell, there was nothing particularly special this Sunday just gone... other than a whole lot of people ignored the weather to meet up and play some games. We even had a couple of kids tag along.

It's worth pointing out the Sturges West Community House has space outside, as well as additional rooms, where kids can play. Your kids might not want to watch the adults play toy soldiers, but they could bring their own to play with other kids. This might be something to think about if you can't get a full leave pass from your other half.

Back to the gaming, we had a full room and it got a little tight at times, but everyone sucked in their respective guts and made it work.

Frostgrave, Magic, and HALO Fleet Battles (front - back)TNT, Flames of War, DZC, Bolt Action: Commando (front - back)

Frostgrave made a triumphal return to T.C.O.W as Molly finally got a game in. It was his fabulously painted dwarf enchanter and crew against my still work-in-progress goblin witch and crew. Our crews battled over Molly's new 4Ground fantasy terrain, a mix of generic ruins and Mordanburg houses. It really suited the setting and only needed some fake snow to complete the effect.

That's how the terrain looks straight out of the box (and assembled).

As for the game, the less said about that the better. My die had trouble rolling higher than 10 for most of the game, meaning even the attacks that did hit had no effect. In the end, my goblins skulked off the table dragging two pieces of treasure while Molly's dwarves claimed four. On the up side, the game was a lot of fun and I'm looking forward to my next one.

Next to us, Harrison and Peter got their post apocalypse fix with a game of This is Not a Test (TNT). The game has been on a bit of a low ebb of late, but it's a good bet things will pick up again once we start receiving the books (and other goodies) from the game's recent Kickstarter. I only managed to get one photo of the game, but Harrison has posted more on Facebook.

The Magic Commander league is still going strong. We had two tables of the usual suspects playing this week, with one game going until almost home time. Magic has a strong momentum with no signs of slowing down.

Meanwhile, the massed ranks of the Soviet Union's armoured might clashed with some of the best the German Wehrmacht had to offer. I don't recall the final score, but things certainly didn't look good for the Ruskies when I snapped these photos.

If you're wondering where the blue buildings came from, I'll get to those a little later.

In the somewhat distant future of Dropzone Commander, Alex's United Colonies of Man took the fight to Damian's Resistance on the streets of a war-ravaged city. This game was as epic as it gets, with both sides slugging it out for hours. If you'd like to see some more photos, Alex posted some to Facebook.

The battlefield with a Coke can for scale (no bananas were available). The UCM's artillery covers their dropships' advance.
Resistance helicopters prepare to pounce. The Resistance commander rides into battle in style.

Gregory ran a couple of demos of HALO: Fleet Battles, picking scenarios from the rule book that best showed off the main aspects of the game. Sadly, I wasn't able to get any photos of the games, but if you're a fan of the games it's well worth checking out. There's a ground combat version of the game coming, too.

Finally, David bought along some rules he's been working on for a pared down version of Bolt Action called Bolt Action: Commando. The premise of the game is you field a single section of inexperienced soldiers. Models activate individually and gain experience over time. You also earn supply points that can be used to purchase equipment and improve the abilities of your soldiers.

The Commando battlefield.Russians are not known for their subtly.
Indians use buildings to cover their advance......while one prepares an ambush for some DAK.

The rules are still in beta, but if you'd like to give it a go bring a dozen models along to club and get playing. The games I saw lasted no longer than an hour, and that was due to poor dice rolls making most of the shots miss.

Considering the recent announcement of Bolt Action 2nd Edition, this might be the game that scratches out 28mm WW2 itch until later this year.

Remember those blue buildings? They were made by Faizel (aka Token) and his shiny new 3D printer. He also had some bags of 15mm tanks and Warhammer Epic vehicles. I didn't get any photos of those models, but they looked great. Plenty of detail, even on the Epic vehicles.

Faizel's setup his own Facebook page, Token's Print n' Paint n' Accessories, where you can order your own goodies. This is probably the best way to get back into a game like Epic where the old models are no longer available.

Much detail. So crisp. Wow.
That's it for this week. See you all at the next club day on March 24!

ZOMBIE JESUS! Club Meeting - 27 March

And on the third day, the geeks and gamers of TCOW descended on Sturges West Community House, because gaming was in their blood and did beckon to them.

And Lo! they saw the curtains part and the doors open and Dan said unto them, "bring thine toy soldiers, dice and cards and play."

And so they played....until 6.30 when they had to get out lest another community group enter and judge them.

Fools.

That's right team! Another Easter weekend has rolled around and despite the masses the exodus from Auckland, the doors of TCOW were wide open for gaming! And gaming we done did! Five different systems of varying scales and genres all battling for their victor.

Flames of War

One of the club stalwarts, Pablo and Jon we're playing a demo game for a couple of new-comers to the club. Jon had his Grenadiers and Pablo had his "All the Tanks" American list.

This one had all the hallmarks of some serious fun as the American E8's, Jumbos, 105mm Shermans, 76mm Jumbos and a Super Pershing (yes, Super Pershing!) rolled toward the German lines.

This one eventually came down to an assault in the wheat field. Jon's Grens had decimated the initial Jumbo platoon that tried to dislodge them, so it all came down to Pablo's 105mm Shermans.

So...shooting was too successful, the Shermans assault the empty positions and get close enough for a squish.

Jon then decided on the Hail Mary play, moving his PaK 40's into position to get side shots on the Super Pershing in an attempt to force a company check for Pablo. Unfortunately, he only managed to bail the tank meaning no test and an American victory. A super-fun game!

Bolt Action

More WWII gaming, but on a different scale. Stu and I agreed to play MW-ish game and because it was German on German, really just a training mission in the green desert.

I took my SS with a Pz IV and 8-rad (it's not a Puma) in support while Stu had a Pz III, a 222 and a cheaty Kubelwagen in support of his DAK.

I say cheaty because all he did was hide around the corner, generating an extra order die.

The mission rolled was Maximum Attrition, so just KILL, KILL, KILL! The first turn effectively was both forces running toward each other to get into killing positions.

A few shots were exchanged and I think a DAK trooper bit the big one but turn 2 would see the real action starting to get underway.

With the luckiest of lucky shots, my Pz IV took a shot straight to the turret ring and exploded on the very first shot of turn 2. That, effectively, removed all my AT from the game.

From then on in, it was really a war of attrition with shots being piled into various squads in attempts to dislodge and destroy. With both sides being Veteran, deaths weren't easy to muster though.

This one ended in a 5-2 in favour of the DAK but we had a heap of fun on the way!

Despite not actually playing the Japanese, I decided to break out my new Japanese dice from the awesome dudes at Dice of War. You should really check them out if you're in the market for some WWII themed dice.

Magic

This week saw a hiatus from the EDH League as Token was giving his sister away. So instead our Magic crew decided to give Monkey's Cube a whirl as well as getting some Tiny Leaders games in.

We also had a game of Warmahordes being played and also filmed so you may see this online at some point.

And finally, some Dystopian Wars. I haven't seen this played before and I must say, 'twas pretty interesting!

So no choccie eggs this year, but a heap of gaming fun.

See you in 2 weeks, TCOW'ers!
